Markers Course

I am delighted to say that that at the recent Markers Course we had 100% success amongst which were five B.B.C. members:- Christine & Derek Mawson; Helen & Eric Kay and Debbie Connolly, shown above.
The course was run for three consecutive Fridays, (with 12 attending from various clubs) the first day being held completely in the classroom with the candidates taking copious notes and delving into the Law book. Strange words like, pre-amble; position; body language; the difference between “Advice” and “Information” etc.
It is hard to get back into the classroom attitude and when the dreaded words “ on the last day, you will be having a practical and written examination” are heard. We, the instructors can feel the tension throughout the class. But the course is not only good for learning how to mark properly, it also helps with your own bowling skills and we do try to make it fun as well.
The second day is spent mainly out on the green, and on this occasion it was really hot, never the less the new experience of learning the various methods of measuring and learning what different distances are for kept everyone busy. A good sign that all was going well was the conversations at lunch break and the fact that everyone was keen to get back on the green.
Final day arrived and after being divided into groups of three with a qualified Umpire with each group, the practical exam took place. Different measures were set up as well as interesting questions from the mat!! After lunch the written exam took place, and I am so pleased to say that the results were excellent
The course has developed over the years, and I am sure will make changes as we progress. Those of you who took the course in the early years will be surprised at the new concept. Please feel free to talk to me or my co-instructor Tony Lawley.
If there was enough interest amongst the B.B.C. CBUMA Markers I am sure we could arrange a one day refresher course, or perhaps an open forum?

Congratulations to the 5 BBC members who passed the CBUMA Markers Course, our picture shows Helen Kay, Derek Mawson, Debbie Connolly, Eric Kay and Christine Mawson on the last day of the course.
