Benitachell Bowls Club v Finca Guila Bowls Club

Kings Cup match 19th July 2012

Another hot day, today we were at Finca Guila playing in the Kings Cup Northern league. This is a cup played for by all the Spanish Bowling Clubs, and players must be Federated to the "Federation Española de Bolos". The competition is played in two leagues, Northern Costas and Southern Costas.

The winner of each league then plays off to decide the Kings Cup champions.

Today was the last match of the Northern league and Benitachell had to take at least four points to win the league, and push Javea Green into second place.

The teams play ladies and men´s singles, pairs, triples and fours, each team having eleven players. Finca Guilla won the toss and took the mat, Benitachell as current holders of the Kings Cup, were determined to retain it and following a pep talk from Captain Bob Cockell, took their rinks. Peter Collins in the men’s singles, took an early lead, four nil, after four ends but was pulled back to nine all after twelve ends, however Peter then won the next six ends to run out victor 21-10. In the ladies singles Carol Meare couldn't hold a strong Dee Lane and went down 21-13. The Benitachell pair of Mary Cockell and Maggie Lawley were leading six nil after three ends, were 10-10, after ten ends but lost out 19-11.

The triples team of Christine Mawson, Feli Croft and Mike Smith lost only five of the eighteen ends to win 23-7, ensuring a league victory, and the fours team of Linda Smith, Derek Mawson, Malcolm Sprawson and Captain Bob Cockell took a shot on each of the last two ends to win 14-12.

Final result 8-4 to Benitachell, the cup was presented by Bob Donnelly the Federation President to Bob Cockell, Benitachell won the league with 65 points from Javea Green with 57 points and Finca Guila with 56 points.
