This past week the club has welcomed bowlers, from several different bowls clubs, who have taken part in the yearly competition. It should have started on Monday 22nd April until the 29th April, but, due to the rain, which we all endured, and a flooded green the competition was delayed for a day.

Tuesday the sun shone and for the rest of the week the weather did not let anyone down. Sunday saw the finals taking place and the games were very close.

The winners of the rinks final from Benitachell Bowls Club were Skip Dudley Davis, Greg Sperring, Gail Chick and Carol Davies and the runners up were Derek Eldon, Lynne Eldon from Javea Green, Maggie Lawley BBC, and Yvonne Briden El Cid.

The mixed pairs final was won by Jean McLaughlin and Chris Salter of Javea Green, with the runners up of Alex Fisher and Yvonne Browne from the BBC.

The Ladies Singles was won by Gail Chick BBC, and the runner up Betty Anderson (last years winner) from El Cid.

The Mens Singles was won by Dudley Davies BBC and the runner up Derek Eldon Javea Green.

A big thank you must go to Ernie Pope and the club committee for the excellent organisation The Umpires and Markers. Graham Spurrier our hard working green keeper and last but not least the catering staff. All of these people deserve a big vote of thanks.

2019 Test Series in Cyprus saw Bowlers from Spain, Israel, Jersey and the Isle of Man competing against each other.

After a great week of Bowls in glorious sunshine saw Spain finish in first place for the Men with the ladies missing by one shot. The combined results giving the overall win to Spain. Cyprus came second.

Congratulations must go to Greg Sperring of the Benitachell Bowls Club who won two gold medals.

For the 10th year running BBC Lions secured the Northern League Championship. Seven months of league bowling ended at Montemar on the 1st April.

It was a fantastic final game of bowls which went right down to the wire, the very last bowl could have gone either way, but, in a nerve racking last end our BBC LIONS team made it with a result of 3 winning rinks against 2 winning rinks from VISTA BELLA LANZADORES.

All 5 teams played well with all players contributing but when it came to the tough finish praise must go to the very experienced lady skips of Maggie Lawley & Jacquie Roberts for pulling off fantastic shots with their final 3 bowls.

The cup for the Winners was presented to the Lions Captain Dave Roberts – a job well done.

The Benitachell Bowls Club Lions final game of the Northern League took place on Monday 18th March at home to Javea Green Quartz. BBC required 4 points to secure the championship against the BBC Tigers who were chasing them. A hard fought game ensued against our old rivals. The Lions won on two rinks with an excellent score giving themselves the extra points to carry the game to 6 - 4.

Not to be outdone the BBC Tigers in the Northern League took 2nd place to the Lions. The winners of the Challenger League were the BBC Jaguars who set the pace from the start of the season. Lions Challengers team took 2nd place.
This is a superb achievement from the Benitachell Club Bowlers.

On the 1st April at Montemar the play off against the Southern League Winners, Vista Bella Lanzadores will take place. The Title of Levante Lawn Bowls Champions will go to the winners.

On Tuesday afternoon 12th March, a sunny but rather blustery day, Richard Chamberlain, Vice-Captain of Benitachell Bowls Club welcomed Chatham Civil Service Touring Team.

This was the 5th year we had the pleasure of their company, Captained by Derreck Sherress in his familiar Captains hat, Gold braid and all. The guests enjoyed lunch and then prepared themselves to do battle.

Despite the wind, bowling on all rinks was to a high standard, BBC managed to win on six rinks and Chatham on one rink, the shot difference being 156 - 101.

However more importantly, at the end of the game everyone adjourned into the Club House to enjoy a drink, the raffle and lots of chatter. We very much look forward to a return visit in the coming years.

On September 22nd Saturday, at 15.00 hrs, Benitachell Bowls Club members all came together to play in the Tri-Cats Competition. When new members join the club they are placed in the following teams, Lions, Tigers and Jaguars and these teams a very competitive and play in the Northern League, (the Lions have won the Northern League nine times), so this competition against each other is hard fought and thoroughly enjoyed.

The event was started with a ‘Spider’, which was won by Jennifer Nesteroff a Tiger and was awarded the first two points. For the uninitiated, a penny is placed on the Jack, all the bowlers spread round the green and all bowl on the whistle, the nearest bowl to the penny wins. Teams then had four ends of fun bowling with a great deal of barracking from the oppositions, with cries of unfair and cheating, these of course were completely unfounded. Although it must be said that the adjudicator and scorer were both Lions!!. Four ends of normal bowling followed up by a meal on tables that each team had decorated in their colours, they hoped for more points to help their score, their efforts were so good that all teams were awarded the same points.

The evening started with putting (golf), photo quizzes, dominoes, peg holding and music quizzes. The culmination of the evening saw the Lions in yellow presented with the Tri-Cats trophy as the overall champions, closely followed by the Jaguars in red and the Tigers in blue. A great day and a good start to the annual bowling season.

The BBC 2018 Masters Competition took place over four days from 3rd September to 6th September. In extreme heat and humidity, 70 bowlers from bowling clubs around the Northern Costa Blanca (Javea Green, El Cid, Bonalba), provided some excellent bowling.

The competition comprised four bowling disciplines, namely Rinks, Triples, Pairs and Singles. The photograph shows the overall winning team of Rod Warnes, Lynda Warnes, Mick Adams, Linda Richards, and Jeff Richards all from BBC, together with Izzy Hardy from one of the sponsors, Telitec.

Winners of the individual disciplines were: Rinks - Tony Hesketh-Field, Clive English, Chris Evans and David Browne, Triples - Rod Warnes, Linda Richards and Jeff Richards, Pairs - Jack Wardrop and Dee Hamilton, Singles - Alan Phillips.

BBC thanks Telitec, Ginestar (Renault) and Direkt Optik for sponsoring the competition and all the bowlers who took part.

This last weekend (July 1st) one of our Spanish International Bowlers, Gail Chick, was in the Squad playing at Javea Green against a Northern Select Team. Benitachell had several bowlers in the select side and, despite the heat, enjoyed some very good bowling.

Greg Sperring, also from the BBC, was also invited to play for Spain as a ‘trialist’ and will hopefully be able to wear his own Spanish shirt soon.

Spain is competing in the Ten Nation Test Match in Wales shortly, so require plenty of competitive practice and the BBC wish them every success.

Benitachell Bowls Club saw a full compliment of bowlers on the 20th June take part in an all day competition in memory of Eddie Ansell. Eddie, nicknamed ‘Steady Eddie’ came to Spain in 1988 and together with a group of friends helped form the Bowls Club. For years he took care of the beginner bowlers, was Captain of the Club, performed in the Christmas pantomimes and won many of the competition trophies.

Sylvia (Eddie’s wife) and her family were there to watch what was a really competitive day, starting with ladies teams v ladies, mens teams v men, with a break from the proceedings for lunch, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants and then the final games. A change was made and the teams were graded in order of success and it was Ladies v Men.

The winning team for the ladies were Helen Baxter, Sheila Fairbairn and Jinty Chamberlain, who lost out to the winning men's team, overall winners of the day. The photograph shows Sylvia Ansell presenting the trophy and wine to the men´s team, who were, (left to right) Richard Chamberlain, Rob Hawker and Jeff Richards.

Benitachell Bowling Club were well represented at the El Cid Bowling Club, three day Aussie Pairs competition, held on the 11/12 and 13th of this month. This is an excellent discipline with members from the following Bowls Club. Horadado and Bonalba (the members of these clubs staying in hotels for the three days), Benitachell, Javea Green, and of course El Cid. As always an excellently run competition sponsored by Homes Espana. Thanks to Stuart Beattie, Paul Truncheon and the Umpire Tony Carol, and the committee of El Cid. The catering provided by Sara Hamer and her team was super during the whole competition.

The final saw two of the Benitachell members competing against each other with their partners coming from Javea Green. An excellent game played in extremely hot weather.
