New Carpet Celebrations

On Monday morning 26th August there was an excellent turnout of members for the official opening of our newly re-carpeted green. President Brian Doggett welcomed everyone with a glass of cava, and then announced the winner of the competition to bowl the first bowl - this honour went to Peter Speer, who was subsequently presented with a framed certificate and bowls shirt.

Fifty-six members then took part in a "Last Bowler Standing" competition, another new innovation from our intrepid Bowls Committee. The format proved to be extremely popular - the furthest from the jack on each end losing a life, including those in the ditch or out of the rink, and the last surviving bowler from each rink going through to the final.

Another chance for the first losers on each rink, “The Plate” which was won by Peter Griffiths who was presented with a bottle of cava.

The last two survivors in the final were Maggie and Tony Lawley, the latter (somewhat unchivalrously and perhaps very unwisely) emerging victorious, to be presented with a cup, a bottle of cava and a bowls shirt by the President.

An enjoyable morning all round. And the verdict on the new carpet? - Fantastic! "
