BBC Masters 2014
From 15th to 18th September 90 very keen bowlers from all parts of the northern Costa Blanca played an engrossing game of bowls at Benitachell bowls club. The weather was hot but then so was the competition on the green. Teams played fours, triples, pairs and singles and won good cash prizes at the end, thanks to our sponsors Ginister Renault and De Vere financial management. A good and happy crowd of spectators watched throughout the four days.
The first two days were singles and mixed fours and after the group games and then semi-finals it as down to the finals on Tuesday afternoon. First to finish was the singles game between Maggie Lawley & Vee Wood which was won in dramatic fashion by a powerful finish from Vee Wood. Just a taste of the many close games to follow.
The next final saw Lynne & Derek Eldon, Yvonne Briden and Derek Randall beat Yvonne & David Carvath, Dave Ings and George Casson, in a hard fought game.
After a well-earned rest it was all go with pairs and triples on day 3. More games on day 4 followed by the semis and finals and presentations. In the pairs final Maggie Lawley (BBC) and Derek Randall (El Cid) played superbly to beat Velia Wood and Peter Collins 9-4. The triples final was very close and spectators saw the most dramatic finish of the day when Christine & Derek Mawson & Viv Erridge grasped victory with 6 shots in the last two ends to win 10-9. Well done our BBC stars.
The overall team prize winners were all very close in the points table and it was not decided until the last game was played. In third place was Alan & Jan Phillips, Tony & Anne McKenna and Paul Brown; in second place Peter Collins, Carol & Dudley Davies, Velia Wood & Edward Teal; and the winners were Maggie Lawley, Derek Randall, Derek & Lynne Eldon and Yvonne Briden.
It was an eventful competition for several of the new bowlers with the Late Comers reaching the rinks semi-final but were knocked out by the eventual winners. That team from BBC contained 3 new bowlers; well done Terry Quinton, Joyce & Ernie Pope & Ruth Meadows. All together it was a friendly bowls tournament with some memorable moments.
