JAGUARS REPORTS

Friday 24th March 2017 BBC Jaguars v Bonalba

We set off down the AP7 for our final game of the Northern League season to play the rearranged fixture against Bonalba. Our hopes were high after yesterdays good result against Calpe but it was not to be repeated, with a win on one rink, a draw on another we picked up just three points, although the overall shot difference was only two shots, 68 - 70. More disappointment followed as our Challenger team, within 'touching distance' of taking the title, fell at the final hurdle and suffered only their fourth loss of the season 10 - 30. Finishing level on points with the BBC Lions, but with an inferior shot difference, they took second place in the Challenger League once again.

Mal Chamberlain, Sally Rush & Chris Barnsby, on Rink 4, took four of the first nine ends but costly fours on the fourth and eighth ends saw them five shots behind, 7 - 12. They again won four of the second nine ends and the shot difference increased slightly, 12 - 20.

Although they only won three of the first nine ends, Tim Woodcock, Iris Gardiner & Steve Griffin, on Rink 5, were in the lead 10 - 8, following some good scoring. The shot difference remained the same at fourteen ends, 14 - 12, but in a determined fight back their opponents tied the game at sixteen shots each.

On Rink 7, Christine Mawson, Richard Gardiner & John Coates conceded a three and a two to be five shots down with two ends played. The next two ends produced two shots for each team but the a six for the Jaguars on the fifth end put them in front for the first time, 8 - 7. The shot difference remained the same after nine ends, 12 - 11 and by the twelfth end the opposition had drawn level, 14 - 14. Dominating the next five ends with some good scoring they moved into an unassailable lead, 27 - 14, their opponents took a single on the final end, 27 - 15.

Next door on Rink 8, Julie Robson, playing her first 'Away' league game, Viv Humble & Derek Mawson found themselves 1 - 5 down after three ends but promptly scored a five on the very next end to go 6 - 5 in front. By the ninth end they were just two shots behind, 9 - 11, but only winning three of the last nine ends left them six shots adrift at the finish, 13 - 19.

The disappointment of the day was for our Challenger team, who after having had a fine winning run of eight games, came up against a Skip in fine form, he managed to draw, play running woods with great effect and played exceptionally well to deny them the Challenger League title. Losing the first six ends they were 8 - 0 down, they picked up their first two shots on the next end but dropped a five on the eighth, 2 - 13. By the eleventh end they had cut the deficit to six shots, 8 - 14 but could only win one of the remaining seven ends and finished twenty shots behind, 10 - 30.

In the Challenger League, second place, for the second time in three seasons is a good result, only losing out on shot difference this year. We have used seventeen players during the season and only lost four games, so well done everyone.

For the main team a disappointing season, finishing with our lowest position in the Northern League for several years. It has been difficult having several 'key' players missing for a number of weeks and for one game at the end of 2016 we only had twelve players available, just enough to fulfil the fixture.

To all of the members of the Jaguars I am thankful for the support you have shown both to me and Vice-captain Tim, who did a magnificent job in my absence last year and without whose support my Captaincy would have been impossible.

Let's all now enjoy our 'end of season' lunch on Monday at La Cocina.

Thursday 23rd March 2017 BBC Jaguars v Calpe

Eighteen days have elapsed since our previous Northern League match and the enforced rest seems to have been good for many of us, with the Jaguars recording a seven points to three win today, taking the match with a shot difference of plus fourteen, 71-57.
Playing our 'Double Header' Challenger match today also produced wins on both rinks, four points and a shot difference of plus twenty two, to take the Jaguars team to the 'TOP of the CHALLENGER LEAGUE TABLE'.

Sally Rush, John Ranger & Richard Gardiner were on Rink 2, playing an experienced Calpe trio.
Single shots on the first three ends, Jaguars 2 - 1 up, the opposition then took a four and a three on the next two ends to move six shots in front, 2 - 8. By the ninth end Jaguars were still five shots down, 6 - 11 but over the next five ends, of which they scored on four, our team had clawed their way back to draw level on twelve shots each. Three singles on the next three ends saw the team move into a three shot lead with one to play, unfortunately their opponents picked up the three shots required to get the draw, 15 - 15, but a valuable point gained.

On Rink 4, Christine Mawson, Chris Barnsby & John Coates, bowled well and stormed into an eighteen shot lead by the ninth end, 20 - 2, winning seven of the nine ends, including seven shots on the fourth end. A slightly more even second half where they won five ends to four, giving them a well earned 29 - 9 win.

Next door on Rink 5, Jackie Munt, Viv Humble & Derek Mawson found themselves four shots behind after three ends, 0 - 4 but by the ninth end they had taken a seven shot lead, 13 - 6, following a couple of high scoring ends. Still six shots ahead after the fourteenth end, 15 - 9, but a dropped four on the next end saw Calpe move to within two shots, 15 -13. Could or players hold their nerve?
With a two and a single, dropping a single on the last end, they ran out winners by four shots, 18 - 14.

Once again Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & Mick Adams were drawn on Rink 7, but found themselves 2 - 14 behind by the ninth end, having picked up just two singles. In a more balanced second half they won five of the ends, mostly singles, and cut back some of the deficit to lose by ten shots, 9 - 19.

Our 'HOME' Challenger team of Pam Coombe, Trevor Rush & Jack Chamberlain were on Rink 1 where they scored on just four of the first nine ends, but in taking two fours and two threes against five singles, had moved into a nine shot lead, 14 - 5. By the fifteenth end they had moved further ahead, 21 - 7, but dropped a four on the next end before taking a four and a single on the next two ends to come out 26 - 11 winners, two points and a valuable plus fifteen shots.

The 'AWAY' Challenger team of Tim Woodcock, Iris Gardiner & Steve Griffin played their game on Rink 6. With a magnificent run they took seven of the first nine ends, dropping just two singles, and led by twelve shots, 14 - 2. At the thirteenth end they were a bit further ahead, 19 - 5, but in a determined 'run home' their opponents took the final five ends to cut their deficit to seven shots, but another valuable two points gained for the Jaguars.

A much better 'all round' performance from the whole side today playing a team in the top four of the league, I ask myself why do we sometimes struggle against lower placed sides?
In the Challenger League we are now holding 'top spot', level on points with the BBC Lions, but with a superior shot difference, (+145 to +141).

Our final game is tomorrow morning at Bonalba, if we play with the 'spirit' shown today, I am sure we can achieve a good result.

Monday 6th March 2017 BBC Jaguars v JG Opal

A beautiful sunny day, saw the Jaguars up against local rivals JG Opal, although the gusty wind did cause some problems. Both teams have struggled to get the 'results' this season, who would come out on top today? Unfortunately it was not BBC Jaguars, who were unable to take a single point from the four main games, going down by all 10 points, with a score line of 43 - 81.
However on a much brighter note the Challenger team had a good win by 22 - 8, to maintain their quest for the title and the Friendly team also had a good win by 22 - 14.

On Rink 4 the Challenger team of Pam Coombe, Trevor Rush & Jack Chamberlain took a while to get into their stride and only won one end of the first four but the scores were level at 4 - 4. They took the next seven ends without reply to lead by 13 - 4 after eleven ends. One to the opposition on the next end followed by a two, a one, a four and a single for Jack's team, the game was all but over after sixteen ends with the score at 21 - 5. A three to their opponents followed by a single for the Jaguars team gave a final score of 22 - 8, a great performance again.

Sally Rush, Lynn Stothard & Chris Barnsby played on Rink 1 and started slowly, they were 1 - 3 behind after four ends. A magnificent six on the fifth end, followed by a super four on the seventh end put them six shots ahead, 11 - 5. By the eleventh end they were further ahead 16 - 8, but then dropped a four and a two in the next two ends, 16 - 14, it was getting too close for comfort. Chris and his team finished strongly taking four of the last five ends, the fifteenth end was tied, and had a great 22 - 14 win, well done.

Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & John Coates struggled against strong opposition on Rink 2, only taking four singles in the whole game to lose by 4 - 28.

Mick Adams, Carole Nicholas & Richard Gardiner on Rink 3 found it difficult to get the 'weight' and although they won eight ends, just singles, could not keep up with their opponents, 8 - 18.

On Rink 6, Jackie Munt, Viv Humble & Derek Mawson had a seesaw game with the score fluctuating between the teams. All square after four ends with 4 shots apiece, a four to the Jaguars on the fifth end but then four ends without scoring gave a score of 8 - 14 after nine ends. Four ends later, the thirteenth, they were still five shots behind, 12 - 17 but a run of three winning ends put them two shots up with two ends to play, 19 - 17. It was all square 19 - 19 with just the final end to come, but it was not to be and they lost by a single shot 19 - 20, a great contest.

Out on the 'road' rink, No. 7, Tim Woodcock, Iris Gardiner & Steve Griffin had a very competitive game and were tied at seven shots each after nine ends. One shot ahead three ends later, 9 - 8 but after a further three ends, the fifteenth, they were two shots down, 10 - 12. They managed to take only one of the last three ends and were squeezed out by three shots, 12 - 15.

Our next game is on Monday 13th March, away to Bonalba, before our final game of the season, at home to Calpe on Thursday 23rd March.

Monday 27th February 2017 BBC Jaguars v EC Sabres

The sun was shining, on probably the best day of the year so far, for the short drive North to El Cid, to play against the Sabres. A magnificent win for our Challenger team by 28 - 5, keeping them in the hunt for the title. The main team did not fare so well, losing by seven shots overall, 62 - 69, and gaining just two points. The Friendly team also put in a good performance with a 19 -12 victory.

The Challenger team of Pam Coombe, Trevor Rush & Jack Chamberlain, on Rink 6, dominated their game winning seven of the first nine ends to lead by 15 - 2 at the halfway stage. They took another seven ends of the second nine to record a magnificent 28 - 5 victory. Very well done.

Jackie Munt, Derek Mawson & Richard Gardiner drew Rink 5 and took the first seven ends to lead by 15 - 0, after nine ends the score was 16 - 2. Although they only won four ends in the second nine, they scored freely, dropping just five singles, to come away with a super 28 - 7 win and collected the only two points for the Jaguars team.

Next door on Rink 4, it was a different story for Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Iris Gardiner who faced a very experienced trio, 9 - 0 down at six ends. Two three's and they were just three shots behind, 6 - 9, a two and a single to the opposition, a three and a single for the Jaguars, just two shots down after twelve ends, 10 - 12. Unfortunately they were unable to maintain the momentum and lost the last six ends, final score 10 - 23.

Rink 3, Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & John Coates won the first two ends to lead 4 - 0, their opponents won the next four ends and took the lead, 4 - 6. With a five on the seventh end but in dropping two shots on the eighth, the scores were tied at 8 - 8. Five ends later, after thirteen, they were just ahead, 13 - 11.
Once again the Jaguars team were unable to score in those last five ends and went down 13 - 20.

For Len Petty, Chris Barnsby & Mick Adams, on Rink 2, it was a struggle all the way after dropping a five on the first end, they were further behind at the ninth, 5 - 13.
They pulled back to within five shots on the fifteenth end, 11 - 16 but lost three singles to finish on 11 - 19.

Our Friendly team of Sally Rush, Carole Nicholas & Viv Humble, on Rink 1, took a while to get going and only won three of the first nine ends to be six shots adrift at half way, 4 - 10. Then the surge started, with a four on the tenth end, two's on the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth, a three on the fifteenth, they had gone into a six shot lead after fifteen ends, 17 - 11. Taking two out of the three singles scored over the last three ends, they ran out with a good 19- 12 win, thank you and well done.

Next game AWAY at JG Opals on Monday 6th March.
Richard

Thursday 16th February 2017 BBC Jaguars v JG Quartz

After a dull start most of the game was played in sunshine and the treat of rain had disappeared.
The Challenger team continued their winning run in a keenly fought game, taking the two points on offer, with a last end single shot victory.
A win on one rink, with a draw on another, saw the Jaguars take three points in the main game, losing by eight shots overall, 65 - 73.

Pam Coombe, Carole Nicholas & Jack Chamberlain were our Challenger team this week and played on Rink 5. After a good start they were 10 - 2 up after six ends, but their opposition fought back strongly taking the next four ends with a single, two fours and a three to be four shots ahead at the tenth end, 10 - 14. A single and a three put the Jaguars team all square, 14 - 14 after twelve ends, Again their opponents went ahead taking a three, a single and a two, to be six shots in front, 14 - 20, after fifteen ends.
Jack's team were not to be outdone, a super five on the very next end followed by two singles gave them a well deserved, but hard fought win by a single shot, 21 - 20. This cements their second place in the Challenger League, two points behind the leaders but with a game in hand, still all to play for!

Jackie Munt, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin were on Rink 3, playing a strong Quartz trio. Taking five of the first nine ends, a single, three two's and a three, gave them a five shot advantage, 10 - 5. The opposition took the next three ends to cut the deficit to one shot, 10 - 9, after twelve. The Jaguars were five shots ahead again with just two ends to play, 15 - 10, two shots to Quartz on the seventeenth end, another nail biting finish. Two great bowls from the Quartz Skip saw him draw two shots but he was unable to make the third. A win for the Jaguars 15 - 14, well done.

On Rink 4, Tim Woodcock, Lynn Stothard & Iris Gardiner got off to a great start and were 11 - 2 ahead after six ends but a costly five on the seventh end saw them just four ahead at the ninth end, 12 - 8. Four ends later, taking their own five on the twelfth, they were leading 19 - 10 after thirteen ends. In a determined fight back their opponents took the next four ends to lead by one shot 19 - 20, with one end to play. Jaguar's managed to take a single for a well earned draw, 20 - 20.

Len Petty, John Ranger & Chris Barnsby played another very experienced Quartz team on Rink 6 and were tied on seven shots each after nine ends. Three three's and a single in the next four ends saw their opponents go in to a ten shot lead, 7 - 17, after thirteen ends. A five and a two on the next two end put Chris's team within touching distance, 14 - 17, but it was not to be as their opposition took three singles on the last three ends, final score 14 - 20.

Another nip and tuck game on Rink 7, Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & Mick Adams, four shots ahead after four ends 7 - 3 but three shots down at halfway, 8 - 11. Their opponents continued to move ahead and were 10 - 15 after fourteen ends but in a determined fight back the Jaguars took the next three ends with a single, a two and a three to go one shot up with one end to play, 16-15.
It wasn't to be their day, four shots to the opposition on the final end, 16 -19.

We 'hit the road' for our next three games, all Away, before our final game of the season, a Home game against Calpe on Thursday 23rd March.

No game this coming week, our next game is on Monday 27th February at El Cid Sabres.
Richard

Monday 6th February 2017 BBC Jaguars v Finca Guila

After yesterdays gales and it was still blowing this morning in Javea, we took the short drive down the AP7 to find a much calmer green at Finca Guila and the match was played in warm sunshine. The result was not much better for the main teams, 51 - 80 on shots and 2 - 8 on points but once again the Challenger rink came away with a good win by 22 - 13.

Today's Challenger team of Trevor Rush, Carole Nicholas & Jack Chamberlain played on the tricky Rink 6, but obviously found it well as they were leading 15 - 3 after nine ends, taking six ends to three. Their opponents took three of the next four ends and had narrowed the gap to six shots, 16 - 10. A couple of singles and a four in the last five ends was enough to see them home and dry by 22 - 13. Well done.

Once again it was another tight game for Tim Woodcock, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin playing on Rink 4. Taking four ends to five out of the first nine, the teams were all square on 8 shots apiece.
Nip and tuck over the next few ends saw the score tied at 13 all after sixteen ends, a two on the seventeen for the Jaguars gave them the lead and only conceding a single on the last end meant a win by one shot, 15 -14 and the only two points gained.

Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Derek Mawson were on Rink 5, they won four ends with singles out of the first nine but were 4 - 9 down. A costly five on the tenth saw them go further behind but in a spirited fight back they took five of the remaining eight ends to finish just four shots down, 13 -17.

Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & Iris Gardiner on Rink 3, struggled to get going and were 2 - 17 down by the ninth end, it was a bit more even in the second half but they were too far behind and finished 8 - 25.

Pam Coombe, Mick Adams & Harry Chick were drawn on Rink 2 and were 5 - 7 after eight ends.
A costly six on the ninth followed by fives on the eleventh and fifteenth ends put the result beyond doubt for Finca Guila, but seven shots in the last three ends gave a more respectable final score of 15 - 24.

Our Friendly team of Sally Rush, Chris Barnsby and John Ranger had a close game on the notorious Rink 1 and finished just two shots behind, 15 - 17.

A good result for the Challenger team again, four points behind the leaders but with a game in hand, keep it going.

Our next game is on Thursday 16th February at Home to JG Quartz. Richard

Sunday 5th February 2017 BBC Jaguars v BBC Tigers

Today's rearranged game was played in extremely blustery conditions, very difficult for everyone but the Jaguars Challenger team succeeded where everyone else failed and had a good win over a strong Tigers team by 17 shots to 9. The main teams went down heavily 41 - 94 and took no points.

The Challenger team of Trevor Rush, Jack Chamberlain & Chris Barnsby were on Rink 6 and took six of the first nine ends to lead 9 - 4 and in the second half won another five ends to finish on 17 - 9. A tough contest and a well deserved victory, well done.

On Rink 5, Tim Woodcock, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin played another close game and were level on five shots apiece after eight ends. It was nip and tuck over the next nine ends but they were one shot behind after seventeen ends. For the third game running it was all down to the last end but it was not to be with a final score of 13 - 17.

Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & Iris Gardiner on Rink 1 were 6 - 2 up after six ends but four ends later were five shots behind 6 - 11. Taking four of the next six ends they came back to within two shots, 12 - 14. A costly four on the next end, followed by a single on the final end gave a final score of 12 - 19.

Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Derek Mawson on Rink 3 had a tough day, only took five ends and finished with a score of 7 - 27.

Pam Coombe, Mick Adams & Harry Chick were drawn on Rink 7 and also only managed to take five ends with a final score of 9 - 31.

Our Challenger team are now in second place with a game in hand on the teams immediately above and below us, keep it going.
Let's hope for a better result for the main team tomorrow. Richard

Thursday 2nd February 2017 BBC Jaguars v JG Onyx

A dry morning with light overhead cloud and rain forecast for about 1.00pm, we finished just in time before the rain really started. A close game on several rinks, with some last end finishes going the way of the Jaguars, resulted in a 71 - 64 shots, 8 points to 2, win for the home team. With the Challengers also winning by a single shot 20 - 19 and the Friendly winning by 19 - 16 it was a good morning for the Jaguars team.

The Challenger team of Trevor Rush, Jack Chamberlain & Chris Barnsby were on Rink 1, facing the team in second place in the League, it was going to be a tough fight, which proved to be the case. Scoring on four of the first nine ends they were just in front by 9 - 8, four ends later, the thirteenth, they were 2 shots behind, 11 - 13. A super seven on the next end gave them the advantage 18 - 13, but not for long, as a 3,2 & 1 saw Onyx take the lead again on the seventeenth, 18 - 19. On the last end, with the 'grandstand' watching, the shot advantage changed between both sets of players several times, the final outcome resulted in two shots to 'our boys' and a win by the narrowest of margins 20 - 19.

On Rink 2, Tim Woodcock, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin were 0 - 8 down after four ends but by the tenth end had cut the deficit to one shot, 8 - 9. A single and a four to the opposition, a tied end and then a two and four to the Jaguars put the sore at fourteen shots apiece after fifteen ends. Two shots to Onyx then two shots to Jaguars, 16 - 16 after seventeen, who would hold their nerve?
A repeat of last week when the game would be decided on the last end, this time we were not to be denied and took a count of three to finish on 19 - 16.

Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Derek Mawson playing on Rink 3, were all square after nine ends on 8 - 8. A two on the next end gave them the lead but a costly twelve shots on the next four ends, (1,3,2 & 6) saw them drop ten shots behind with four ends to play. Keeping their heads they dug in to take three of the last four ends, only singles, but enough to keep the Jaguars in with a chance of the overall shot difference, final score 13 - 21.

Rink 5, nobody's favourite, saw Mal Chamberlain, Peter Griffiths & Iris Gardiner take on another tough team. In a low scoring first nine ends Jaguars were ahead by 7 - 5, they took a two on the next end, dropped a single, then had a run of five ends where they picked up singles to be 14 - 6 ahead at sixteen ends. On the seventeenth end, disaster, the jack got moved into a pile of Onyx bowls, seven down, 14 - 13! Three great Lead bowls from Mal, consolidation by Peter & Iris, they took a four on the final end 18 -13, the Captain can breathe again!

Pam Coombe, Mick Adams & Harry Chick were drawn on Rink 7, taking five of the first nine ends, with some consistent scoring they were 13 - 6 up, but three ends later, after dropping a six on the twefth, were only two ahead, 15 - 13. A solid finish saw them win five of the remaining six ends to come away with a 21 - 14 victory.

Our Friendly team of Barbara Weston, Sally Rush & John Ranger were drawn on Rink 4 and had another tight game, just ahead 9 - 8 after nine ends. They moved further ahead, 19 - 10 at fourteen ends but held on as their opponents took the last four ends, 1,1,3 & 1, final score 19 - 16.

Well done Jaguars, a great all round squad performance.

Next up the rearranged game against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
Richard

Thursday 26th January 2017 BBC Jaguars v EC Swords

Today's game was rearranged from the previous Thursday, after all of the snow, wind and rain, a much more pleasant day weather wise. After a promising start the Jaguars were up on three rinks but how it turned in the last third of the game. The Challenger rink came out with a great 25 - 7 win, to keep them near the top of the table but for the Main teams losing on three rinks by 47 - 74, 2 points to 8, was disappointing.

The Challenger team, on Rink 3, Barbara Weston (first game this season), Jack Chamberlain & Chris Barnsby, started slowly and were five down after three ends but two ends later were level at five shots all. After dropping a single on the next end, they then won ten consecutive ends with some consistent scoring to be in a commanding position 24 - 6 by end sixteen. One shot to each team on the last two ends put the final score at 25 - 7. A great performance to only lose five ends in the whole game, well done.

Our only winning Main team were Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Derek Mawson playing on the tricky Rink 7, against tough opposition. Taking seven of the first nine ends put them 8 - 4 up. Five ends later they were a bit further ahead 16 - 9 after fourteen. Losing the next three ends to the opposition, Swords had pulled back to just one shot behind 16 - 15. The final end saw our team hold their nerve and take a single to finish two shots ahead, 17 - 15, to gain our only two points.

On Rink 1, Tim Woodcock, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin had a flying start taking eight of the first nine ends to be 10 - 2 ahead, in a low scoring game. They were still ahead, 14 - 9, after fourteen ends, but by the seventeenth end they were behind for the first time in the game on 14 - 15.
Jaguars were holding four shots with Swords last bowl to come and Tony Carroll drew in for shot, final score 14 - 16.

Rink 4, Mal Chamberlain, John Ranger & Iris Gardiner also started strongly, only losing two ends in the first nine, to be 10 - 2 ahead. This is where the game changed and the opposition only lost one end in the second nine. Two disastrous ends, thirteen and fourteen, when they dropped a total of eleven shots, effectively cost them the game, with a final score of 11 - 22.

Len Petty, Graham Spurrier & Mick Adams had an awful time on Rink 5, only scoring on four ends to go down by 5 - 21.

Let's hope for an improvement in our next match, which is on Thursday 2nd February when we face JG Onyx at home.

Richard

Thursday 12th January 2017 BBC Jaguars v BBC Lions

On bright and sunny, but gusty morning the Jaguars took on their Club rivals, the Lions, it promised to hold all the elements of a 'local derby' and this proved to be the case. With both sides taking two wins each it all came down to shot difference for the extra two points, but they were also shared both sides scoring 58 shots, so 5 points each, a fair result on the day.

On Rink 3, Trevor Rush, Richard Gardiner & Steve Griffin faced Rob Hawker, Feli Croft & Dave Roberts, after nine ends only nine shots had been scored and the Jaguars were just in front 6-3. In the second half of the game, the Jaguars team took another six of the nine ends, managing to pick up a couple of twos and threes and ran out 18-7 winners, well done.

Pam Coombe, Mick Adams & Harry Chick took on Annie Jones, Brian Fenton & Trevor Neale on Rink 4. After nine ends Jaguars had won five and lead 11-7, taking six of the next eight ends, with some good scoring, put the score at 22-9, with one end to play. The eighteenth end was the final end of the whole match and would decide the shot difference! Jaguars were three up in the match, all to play for! After the twos had bowled Jaguars were lying two, Harry's first bowl didn't change things, Trevor's first bowl trailed the jack but Jaguars we still holding one. Harry's second bowl was good weight but didn't get back onto the rink, dead bowl. Trevor fired with his second bowl and took the jack into the ditch to give the Lions 4 shots (and possibly the game). Harry's final bowl came in for fourth bowl, game tied, Trevor's last bowl just ran into the ditch, final score 22-12. Well done.

Rink 5 saw Mal Chamberlain, Iris Gardiner & Peter Griffiths take on Rod Warnes, David Browne & Jeff Richards, by nine ends they were eleven shots adrift, 3-14. A more even second half saw them take four of the final nine ends, but only singles, they could not get a grip on the game and finished 7-21.

Christine Mawson, Lynn Stothard & Derek Mawson were pitted against the 'Lionesses', Linda Richards, Yvonne Browne & Lynda Warnes on Rink 6. Four down after three ends, they were still four down at halfway, 6-10. Although they won five ends in the second half, they were only singles, compared to four twos from their opponents, final score 11-18.

Challengers, Sally Rush, Carole Nicholas & Jack Chamberlain were up against the strong team of Jenny Hawker, Janet Neale & Peter Collins. Unfortunately they were never in the game and only won four ends, finishing 5-25.

On the tricky Rink 7, Len Petty, Graham Spurrier & Chris Barnsby played a Friendly against Terry Quinton, Patty & Eric Johnson. Some heavy scoring on the first three ends put them eleven shots up but by the ninth the opposition were only six behind, 14-8. After thirteen ends, they were just four ahead 17-13, which way would the game go? Scoring a three, a two, a six and a five on the next four ends put the game beyond doubt and a final score of 33-15, very well done.

Thanks to Jack Chamberlain who spent over an hour before the game for clearing the pine needles from rinks 3 to 8.

Well done Jaguars, some good bowling today, our next game is at Home on Thursday 19th January against El Cid Swords.
Richard

Monday 12 December Calpe V BBC Jaguars

We knew that today was going to be a tough game, some changes to the line up this week due to only 12 Jags being available to play. Calpe is never the easiest of away venues, and a number of players, were playing for the first time at Calpe. The Jaguars won on only one rink, with the shot difference going to Calpe so a final score of 2-8.

On Rink 1 Gail Chick, Jackie Munt, (Many thanks for standing in again Jackie!!) & Tim Woodcock, despite winning the first end, struggled to mark a mark in the first half and were trailing 20-1 after 9 ends. They had a great fight back during the second half, reducing the deficit to 17-22 by the 17th. The last end was not to go their way, dropping a 4, with a final score of 17-26.

On Rink 2 Steve Griffin, Trevor Rush & David Goodall making his main team debut, held off a strong team and were 8-10 down at the halfway stage. Despite dropping a 5 on the 10th, The guys dug deep winning, a total of 10 ends, and a final score of 16-18

On Rink 3 Jack Chamberlain, Sally Rush, and Pam Coombe, scored well in the first half, and were leading 13-8. Unfortunately, the second half proved to be a different story, with Calpe dominating the game, and a final score of 16-27.

On Rink 4 John Coates, Peter Griffiths and Mal Chamberlain saved the day bringing in two valuable points. Neck and neck at the halfway stage, the Jags put up a strong fight, and secured a final score of 17-13.

No Challenger match played today.

This match completes the first half of the season,
On a personal note, my grateful thanks to all Jaguars for their support in Richards absence. The squad has missed some of the more experienced members over the past few weeks, but have still pulled together and given their all. My special thanks to John Coates, Trevor Rush Julie Robson and Jackie Munt for agreeing to play at short notice, much appreciated.

Richard and Iris should be back in January, for our home game against the Lions on the 12th January. Enjoy the Festive season, and I look forward to seeing you on the new year.

Monday 28th November JG Onyx V BBC Jaguars

Our Challenger team on Rink 3 of Jack Chamberlain, Carole Nicholas & Sally Rush secured another great win. The teams were neck and neck, with the Jags trailing 6-7 at halfway, but they secured all but 2 of the last 9 ends, with a final score of 16-13. Well done!!

Next weeks game is at home to Finca Guila, let´s come back fighting!!

Thursday 24th November BBC Jaguars V El Cid Sabres

A good result today with several changes to the line up. Winning on two rinks each, with the shot difference again going to the Jaguars, a final score of 6-4 to the Jags. Our Challenger team had a fantastic game, winning 27-7.

On Rink 1, Gail Chick, Steve Griffin & Tim Woodcock, had a tough start winning only 1 of the first 9 ends trailing 14-1. The team pulled back well in the second half, but lost momentum and dropped a 3 on the 17th end, so a final score of 13-21 against.

Rink 5 Harry Chick, Mick Adams & Pam Coombe got off to a great start with a 5 on the first end, and were leading 12-7 by the halfway stage. An even better 2nd half, with some fantastic scoring, and only losing 2 ends the team brought home a brilliant win 32-10

On Rink 6 John Coates, Peter Griffiths and Mal Chamberlain, lead from the start, only losing 3 ends in the entire game . A brilliant result, 30-3. Special thanks to John Coates for stepping in for us.

Rink 8, A new Jaguars Team, Chris Barnsby (taking over from Derek), Lynn Stothard and a Jaguars debut for Julie Robson, Welcome Julie and thanks for standing in. After losing the first two ends the ends were shared up to halfway, but the Jaguars were trailing 13-8. A strong fight back from Sabres, who pulled ahead finishing 23-13 ahead.

Another change to the Challenger line up this week. Jack Chamberlain, Carole Nicholas, and a warm welcome to David Goodall, playing for the first time in a Challenger game. Our team secured a commanding lead at the hallway stage, leading 14-5. The Jaguars dominated the 2nd half, winning all but 2 ends, to secure another fantastic 27-7 victory.

My personal thanks to Peter Griffiths for taking over the formalities after the game.

Well done everyone for some great results.

Thursday 10th November BBC Jaguars V JG Quartz

A great result today for the Jaguars playing away to JG Quartz. Two great wins, and a drawn game, with the Jags also taking the shot difference, a final score of 7-3 to the Jags. The challenger game went to the Quartz 14-22, but a good win for the jags on the friendly.

On rink 1 Peter Griffiths, Veronica Petty & Mal Chamberlain, played a closely fought game, and were level pegging at the halfway stage. The second half, was sadly marred by Veronica taking a nasty fall. After some delay, play resumed, with Viv Humble stepping in to complete the game. The jags managed to hold onto the lead and finish one shot ahead, 14-13. Special thanks to Margaret Walker Carol Davey & Sally Rush who assisted Veronica, and we hope to update on her progress soon.

On rink 2 Gail Chick, Steve Griffin & Tim Woodcock, won the first 4 ends, and maintained a lead well into the game. Unfortunately, they dropped a five on the 17th end, allowing Quartz to take the lead by two points. Digging deep, and whilst holding two in the last, Gail´s final wood so nearly got a result, but the game ended in a worthy draw, 16-16

Rink 4 Derek& Christine Mawson with Lynn Stothard, fell behind for the first few ends before levelling the score on the 9th. However, despite their best efforts, the Quartz pulled a few shots ahead and maintained the lead right to the end, finishing the game 21-17 ahead.

On rink 5 Harry Chick, Mick Adams & Pam Coombe maintained the lead from the start, leading the first half of the game 6-5. Taking 6 of the last 9 ends, the team continued to strengthen their lead, finishing on a fantastic score of 15 – 8.

On Rink 6 the Challenger team of Chris Barnsby, Carole Nicholas & Len Petty, did not get off to a good start, dropping 8 points in the first three ends. They fought back hard, to be just one point behind 8-9 the 8th end. The opposition won the next three ends taking another 8 points, and despite a determined fight back, all credit to Len Petty who whilst leaving the game to attend to Veronica, came back to complete the final end, but with today´s points going to the Quartz 14-22

Our friendly team of Jack Chamberlain, Viv Humble & Sally Rush ,had a great game. Leading from the start, the Jags edged ahead with a score of 7-4 at the halfway point, an amazing 6 on the 13th , secured the lead and even though they dropped the last 4 ends, secured a great 16-11 win for the Jags.

A great mornings bowling, and a superb win for the Jaguars, well done everyone.

On behalf of the Jaguars, and all at BBC, our grateful thanks to all those at Javea Green who assisted Veronica today.

Monday 31st October BBC Jaguars V Bonalba

Another Sunny day, but not one of the best results for the Jaguars. Whilst there was some great bowling on both sides, Bonalba took the points on 3 rinks with a drawn game on the 4th. Also taking the shots 56-76 to win 9-1. The Jaguars had a great win on the challenger rink 22-14.

On rink 5 Peter Griffiths, Veronica Petty & Mal Chamberlain, played a closely fought game, and despite being 9-4 down at the halfway stage fought back winning 4 of the last 5 ends to draw the game at 15 shots each.

Rink 4 saw Derek& Christine Mawson with Lynn Stothard, lead the game for the first 4 ends, but Bonalba pulled back to lead the game 9-6 by the 9th end. Derek´s team fought back winning the next 4 ends and levelled the game at the 14th. Bonalba fought back again, finishing the game 19-13 ahead.

On rink 3 Gail Chick, Steve Griffin & Tim Woodcock, despite falling behind from the start, kept the score tight trailing by 3 points at the 9th. A highly competitive game, with some good bowling from all the players, but some fantastic shots from Bonalba, prevented our team from keeping the shots, eventually finishing the game 21-13 to Bonalba

On rink 2 Harry Chick, Jack Chamberlain & Pam Coombe produced some great bowling, leading the first half of the game 10-7. Bonalba pulled ahead on the 15th gaining a 6, and despite their best efforts Harrys team eventually lost out to Bonalba 21-15

Another great day for our Challenger team on rink 1. Falling slightly behind at the halfway stage, Chris Barnsby, Carole Nicholas & Len Petty, dug deep, and picked up some great points in the last few ends securing another Jaguars Challenger victory 22-14.

Our friendly team of John Ranger Viv Humble & Graham Spurrier, played a close fought game, winning 11 ends, but dropping a 5 on the 17th saw them lose out on the prize, 23-20 to Bonalba.

We have 10 days now before we play away to Javea Quartz, refreshed and ready to fight back.

Monday 24th October BBC Lions V BBC Jaguars

A lovely sunny day to play a home derby against the Lions. Some great bowling by both teams winning two games each, with a 78-61 shot difference in the Jaguars favour, who won the game 6-4

On rink 8 a fantastic 21-8 win for Peter Griffiths, Veronica Petty & Mal Chamberlain, against a strong Lions team. Winning the first 4 ends they got away to a great 7-0 lead, and were ahead 11-4 by the 9th. Peter’s team dug deep, coming home with a great shot difference for the jags.

On rink 4 Harry Chick, Jack Chamberlain & Pam Coombe produced another great win for the Jags 23-15. A comfortable 10-3 lead by the 8th end, but dropping a 5 on the 9th, Harrys team kept up the pressure, winning 7 of the last 9 ends securing another valuable two points, and a solid shot difference.

A hard fought game on rink 3 for Derek& Christine Mawson with Lynn Stothard, losing by just two shots 17-19. Despite winning 5 of the first 9 ends, Derek´s team were 7-10 down at the halfway stage. The Lions kept fighting, and the team were 7-17 down by the 13th. Digging deep again in true Jags spirit, and pulling back 2 fantastic 4s the team managed to claw back the shots, keeping up the pressure right to the end.

On rink 2 facing the Lionesses, Gail Chick, Steve Griffin & Tim Woodcock, played a close fought game winning 9 ends a piece but just missing out on victory with a final score of 17-19. The lead kept passing between the teams, with the Lions ahead at the 9th. Despite being 5 shots down by the 16th, the Jags again dug deep and kept up the pressure winning the last two ends finishing 2 shots behind.

The ever popular rink 7 found the Challenger team today. Chris Barnsby, Carole Nicholas & Len Petty, comfortably beating the Lions by a brilliant 29 – 9. Winning all but 5 ends, our challengers got off to a great start securing a 6 on the 5th end and leading by a healthy 17-5 at the half way stage. Maintaining the pressure and continuing to score well increasing the lead right up to the end.

WELL DONE JAGS & thank you for all your support, much appreciated. A great win for our first match in Richards’s absence, I am sure that he will be delighted with the result. Another Home game next week, against Bonalba, let’s keep fighting and make Richard proud.

Thursday 20th October BBC Jaguars v BBC Tigers

Another rainy night but the game was played in reasonable weather with only the odd spot of rain.
No much to say about today's game, Bob Bailey has said it all on the Tigers page.
Only one winning rink but the match was lost by just two shots, 76 - 78, 2 points for to 8 against.

A good win for Tim Woodcock, Steve Griffin & Gail Chick on Rink 5 by 26 - 8, only losing four ends, they almost made up the shot difference of the other three rinks.

Christine & Derek Mawson with Lynn Stothard, were 2 - 11 down at seven ends but a concerted effort over the next six ends saw them in front on 15 - 12 after thirteen, however they could not sustain their run and lost the last five ends to go down 15 - 23.

Rink 3, Pam Coombe, Jack Chamberlain & Harry Chick had their usual nip and tuck game, dropped a six on the third end but were all square 13 - 13 after nine ends. The opposition took six of the last nine ends to finish two shots in front in a high scoring game, 22 - 24.

John Ranger & Richard Gardiner could not keep up with their opponents and despite some good bowls from Skip Peter Griffiths the team were 3 - 13 down at nine ends, a more even second half, the game finished 13 - 23.

The Challenger rink of Mal Chamberlain, Carole Nicholas and Veronica Petty fared no better and went down 7 - 29.

Thanks to our newer bowlers in the Friendly teams for supporting the Jaguars, David Goodall, Barry Jones & Len Petty (15 - 23) and Wendy Jones, Graham Spurrier & Iris Gardiner (14 -12).

Better days will come, please give Tim all your support in my absence.
Richard

Monday 10th October EC Swords v BBC Jaguars

After heavy overnight rain and early morning showers in some places we wondered if the game would be on but we managed to play the match in fine weather.

No nail biting finish this week, we were happy to come away four points against a strong EC Swords side, two rinks each but a 65-79 score line, however there was another great win for our Challenger team by 21-7.

After dropping a five on the first end, Christine & Derek Mawson with Lynn Stothard, playing on Rink 5, got into their stride and took the next five ends to lead 7-5 after six ends. By the ninth end they were 12-7 ahead, taking five shots on the eighth end, three singles and another five on the thirteenth saw them at 20-7. Three shots against on the next end but a six on the fifteenth put them firmly in control, two singles and a three for the opposition gave them a final score of 26-15 and two valuable points for the Jaguars, well done.

Next door on Rink 4, Len & Veronica Petty with Richard Gardiner, had a close game for the first nine ends, just behind by 5-8. The Swords lead went off injured and a substitute came on and our team was under pressure, despite some great bowling by Veronica. Jaguars could only pick up two singles over the final nine ends and went down by 7-27.

Rink 3, Pam Coombe, Jack Chamberlain & Harry Chick got off to their usual slow start and were 0-10 down after three ends, including dropping a seven on the second (second week running, a good omen!!). Two fours and a couple of singles for and two twos against put them on 10-14 by the ninth. At the twelfth end they were one shot in front, two singles against on the next two ends and they were behind again. Not to be denied they won the last four ends with a 1,3,1 & 1 and had taken another hard fought win by 21-16, another two points.

Tim Woodcock, Steve Griffin & Gail Chick, on Rink 2, faced a strong triple and were 0-10 after six ends. Winning the next five ends they pulled back to 7-10, even scoring by both teams over the next six ends, they were still three shots behind after seventeen, 11-14. Going for shots, Gail killed the eighteenth end when they were three down and it had to be replayed. In the replayed last end Gail found herself three down with her final bowl to play, she hit the target once again but the jack ran to her opponents back bowls and was unlucky to lose a count of seven, very hard luck!

Mal Chamberlain, John Ranger and late substitute Skip, Mick Adams played the Challenger team on the tricky Rink 6. Dominating the first nine ends, they won six (including a six count) and were up by 12 shots to 3, continuing in the same manner they took five of the final nine ends, only dropping four singles and came away with a great 21-7 win, good bowling.

Next game is against the Tigers, another tough one!!

Thursday 6th October BBC Jaguars v JG Opal

It started as a fine sunny day for our first game of the new Northern League season but part way through the game the wind got up causing all sorts of problems, which some coped with better than others.

In welcoming the Opal team and Captain Joe, Richard said that it was going to be a tough game for both sides and this proved to be the case.

With only one end left to play the scores were tied at 66 all, whoever won the final end would take the two points for the overall shot difference. Players from each side cheered on their team's every bowl as first one team then the other held shot. With just the Skips left to bowl Jaguars were one shot down, with an Opal bowl sitting next to the jack.

Peter Griffiths hit the target with his second bowl to move the jack but in doing so went two down to Opal's back bowls. He ran through with his final bowl, the Opal Skip drew in another and the game was lost by 66 - 69.

Three winning rinks for Jaguars gave us a 6 - 4 points win.

On Rink 2, Christine & Derek Mawson with Lynn Stothard had a great start, winning six of the first nine ends to take an 11 - 7 lead. They continued to pull ahead in the second half, again taking six ends to three, despite a blip on the 13th end when they dropped a five, they ran out worthy winners 22 - 16.

Rink 3, Pam Coombe, Jack Chamberlain & Harry Chick only won three of the first nine ends but taking a seven on the third, helped them to lead by 10 - 8. All square 10 - 10 after 11 ends, 13 - 13 after 15 ends. Dropping a single on the next end they went behind by one shot but a two on the seventeenth followed by a single on the final end gave them a 16 - 14 win.

Tim Woodcock, Steve Griffin & Gail Chick (Gail's first game for the Jaguars) faced a strong Opal team but a fine start saw them lead by 6 - 1 at five ends. Their opponents won the next three ends with a single, three and two but a two on the ninth put them 8 - 7 in front. Over the second nine ends Gail's team won six ends, with five doubles and a single to three ends against, a 1,3,2, final score 19 - 13.

The going got tough on Rink 5, Mal Chamberlain, Mick Adams and Peter Griffiths took a four on the first end but could only pick up a further five singles in the game and went down heavily by 9 - 26.

The Challenger rink of Len & Veronica Petty with Richard Gardiner, played on Rink 6, dropped a single shot on each of the first three ends but then got into their stride and won five of the next six ends to lead by 11 - 4 at the half way stage. At fourteen ends they were ahead by 15 shots to 9, with a four and five on the next two ends they surged ahead and came away with a 24 - 11 victory, well done.

The two Friendly teams played their games in good spirit, a lot of newer, less experienced bowlers on both sides, great to see such enthusiasm. Margot McLean, Sally Rush & Barry Jones (first game for Jaguars and Skip!!) on Rink 1, played a good game but lost by 11 - 22 and Wendy Jones (another Jaguar cub!), Iris Gardiner & John Ranger on Rink 7 came out winners by 22 - 17.

A 6 - 4 win against Opal, never an easy side to beat, is a good start but we cannot be complacent and there is another difficult game on Monday when we are Away to EC Swords. Richard
