Hawaiian Night Saturday 31st July 2010
HAWAIIAN NIGHT, Saturday, 31 July 2010
Aloha, on a beautiful evening on the white sands of Waikiki Beach ……. well perhaps not, but in the courtyard of the Bowls Club on Saturday night 72 members and guests danced the night away to the music provided by DJ Tony Dean who managed to hit the right note with everyone present. We also had a bit of fun during the meal by shouting out the answers to his informal music quiz. Everyone was fascinated to hear someone shout “Helen Shapiro” as the answer to every question and amazed on the one occasion when that was, indeed, the right answer. I suppose the law of averages must be proved sometimes.
Samantha and her team served us with a lovely BBQ and got into the spirit of the evening by wearing their grass skirts and lays. Good job there was no frost that night. Thanks also to all the diners who took the time and trouble to get into the Hawaiian dress. Pity we had one rather bad clash of shirts: the Chinese shops were obviously doing a roaring trade in that particular style.
Probably the “low spot” of the evening was a demonstration of Polynesian dancing by the well known dance troupe of Geoff Kay, Peter Griffiths and Geoff Morris complete with grass skirts and flashing bras (not a pretty sight!).
My thanks must go to Carol & David Meare, Jan & Geoff Kay, Pauline & Peter Griffiths, Bob Cockell, Eric Johnson and Dave Humble who helped to decorate the courtyard with bamboo, flowers and lights to give it a tropical atmosphere. I was even more grateful on Sunday morning when they turned up to return it to its normal state. Your help was very much appreciated.
